A big tree with a bad fork isn't automatically a removal. Steel and a little engineering can buy that tree another twenty or thirty years.
What cabling can and can't do
A cable installed high in the canopy limits how far two stems can move apart in a wind event. It doesn't glue the tree together and it doesn't make a failing tree safe — it reduces the probability of a specific, identified failure.
Good candidates: a co-dominant fork with included bark on an otherwise healthy tree; a long horizontal limb over a driveway or roof; a specimen tree with real value worth investing in; a partial split caught before it ran.
Bad candidates: a tree with significant trunk or root decay; a tree that's mostly dead; a tree where a failure would be catastrophic and the owner needs certainty rather than improved odds. In those cases we'll tell you it's a removal.
It comes with a maintenance obligation
Hardware in a living tree needs looking at. Cables loosen as the tree grows, hardware corrodes, and attachment points get absorbed. Systems should be inspected annually and typically need attention every 5–7 years.
Installing a cable and forgetting about it for twenty years is worse than not installing one, because everybody involved now believes the tree is handled. We put cabled trees on an inspection schedule and remind you.

How long does a cable system last?
Properly installed hardware lasts decades, but it needs annual inspection and periodic adjustment as the tree grows.
Is it cheaper than removal?
Usually, yes — often dramatically so on a large tree. And you still have the tree, which on a mature shade tree is real property value.
Will I see the cables?
Barely. They sit high in the canopy and disappear once the tree leafs out.
